VISITING MARES

During the stud season we welcome a limited number of mares to board with us for breeding. With availability for a maximum of 4–5 mares at any one time, we are able to provide a high level of individual care and attention, ensuring each mare’s specific needs are closely monitored throughout her stay.

Our smaller numbers allow us to carefully manage each mare’s breeding cycle while maintaining a calm, safe environment.

Accommodation

Mares are housed in spacious stables within a barn environment, providing a comfortable and secure setting during their time at the stud. Each mare also benefits from individual turnout, allowing them time to relax and maintain their routine while under our care.

Daily Care

While at the stud, mares receive:

Daily monitoring and care
Teasing to determine the correct stage of the cycle
Handling by experienced stud staff
Careful management throughout the breeding process

A Personal Approach

By keeping the number of mares limited, we are able to give each horse the time, attention and management needed during the breeding process, providing owners with reassurance that their mare is receiving attentive, professional care.

Due to the limited number of spaces available each season, early booking is recommended.

Walk in service for mares -AI

Walk-In Semen Collection & Artificial Insemination Package – £135

We offer a walk-in artificial insemination package for mares that are already showing in season or have been scanned by a veterinary surgeon and confirmed ready for insemination.

This service includes the stallion collection and insemination carried out on site by one of our two fully qualified, DEFRA-approved AI technicians.

Semen may be used from one of our resident stallions or from an external stallion of the owner’s choice. The collection fee is deducted if using semen from a non resident stallion. The insemination cost alone is £50

Can my mare be covered naturally?

Natural AI Cycle

To protect the safety of both stallion and mare, we are unable to offer natural coverings. Instead, we provide a Natural AI Cycle, designed to replicate a live covering while significantly reducing the risk of injury.

This method is particularly suitable for maiden or nervous mares and follows the mare’s natural cycle as closely as possible eliminating the stress and dangers of a live cover. The stallion is collected using a dummy mare, and the mare is inseminated immediately with fresh semen to mirror the timing and conditions of a natural service.

All inseminations are carried out by a fully qualified, DEFRA-approved AI technician on site.

Arrival at Stud

Mares may arrive already in season, or
They can be teased into season using our teaser stallion.

After Insemination

Following insemination, mares may either return home for their 14-day pregnancy scan or remain at the stud if preferred.

Costs

There are no additional AI or veterinary fees for this service. Owners are only responsible for the stud fee and livery. If the mare remains at the stud, the 14-day pregnancy scan will be at the owner’s expense. Please note: Additional veterinary fees may be required if further investigation or treatment is necessary to assist the mare in achieving pregnancy. Any such procedures will only be carried out with the mare owner’s prior consent.

We have successfully trialled the Natural AI Cycle with excellent results, offering breeders a safe and effective alternative to traditional covering.
